The headline late this week was Luis Gutierrez and Nydia Velazquez are seeking the Senatorial seats to be vacated by Senator Clinton and President Elect Obama. To the rest of the nation Gutierrez and Velazquez are nothing more than two Hispanics seeking an opportunity to move up the congressional ladder. For the Statehood movement of Puerto Rico the potential elevation in status and power by the two members of congress is a death knell to the statehood movement.
Both Gutierrez and Velazquez believe Puerto Rico should be a sovereign nation. They are fervent believers of the IndependistaPopularhavethecakeandeatittoopansistas. They will, have in the past, and present, blocked any and all legislation to move Puerto Rico towards to road to statehood.
Here is my confusion, we are American Citizens. If as an American citizen in Puerto Rico I refuse for example to sing the Star Spangle Banner, am I anti-American? What if as a member of congress, I come to Puerto Rico and applaud the anti-American Yankee go home rhetoric, am I anti-American? And what about if I as a member of congress seek to deny 4.5 million American citizens the right to vote, am I anti American? And if as a member of congress I believe the Macheteros are a legitimate organization fighting for the freedom of the Puerto Rican people and the oppression by the colonist American government?
Or if I carry out all of the above am I just another opportunist exploiting the minority vote in the Barrrios of New York and Chicago just to get a job with pay I would not make in the real world.
So, I am confused.
As a Senator and of course member of Congress are not you supposed to pledge to defend and honor the Constitution of the United States of America. (One Nation under God for liberty and justice for ALL).
It is easy to be a champion of the Independent movement for Puerto Rico, or defend the status quo, when you are in the mainland and do not have to put up with the daily crap and third world mentality which has rotted the core of our islands values. To, as in this election, watch history being made and yet as an American citizen not being able to participate in one, if not the, most historic moment of our nations history. We were relegated to the sidelines. Given a bone to participate in a primary process of no real significance or relevance.
Now,what are we as believers of Puerto Rico as the 51st state going to do to stop this from happening. We must do something and soon.
